Abstract
Brings together recent discoveries in the study of Ghirlandaio's drawings and evaluates them in the light of current knowledge of 15th-century drawing history and workshop practice. New drawings are proposed as early works by Ghirlandaio that allow for the first time a view of his development as a draftsman. Unpublished sinopie for two of his frescoes are examined to determine Ghirlandaio's mural technique and the role of preparatory drawings in their design and execution. Additions to the group of drapery studies drawn at various points inhis career are also proposed and the group is examined for insight into Ghirlandaio's procedure and style. Finally, observations on the role of drawings in his shop are made based on an overview of his surviving drawings. -- AATA
