Abstract
The introduction of the Indian shawl to Britain and the development of the use and manufacture of shawls in Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries are described. The design and increase in popularity of shawls as fashion garments are also discussed. Various kinds of patterns and types of shawls made by leading manufacturers of the 18th and 19th centuries are illustrated by photographs. Three museums that house comprehensive collections of shawls are listed. -- AATA
