Abstract
This article summarizes the findings of research conducted at Cornell University on the role in nature of cochineal dye (carminic acid). Carminic acid, a red dyestuff from cochineal, scale insects, was one of the most important red dyes in the textile industry before the introduction of aniline dyes in the latter half of the 19th century. -- AATA
