Over 100 textiles dating from the 4th, 5th, and 6th centuries are on exhibition at the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C. Most are tapestries, and all were found in Egypt. They owe their survival to the unique preservative qualities of the Egyptian sand and to the common practice in Late Roman Egypt of burying the dead in elaborate clothes.
