Abstract
Describes the conservation of a wooden polychromed coat of arms of unknown date and origin in the Vanderbilt Museum, Centerport, New York. The coat of arms suffered from worm damage, poor prior restorations, and paint flaking. Examination of the paint revealed an overpainting of either latex or acrylic emulsion covering a layer of protein-based paint and gilt. In some areas, a third layer of red lacquer was found. The ground was gesso applied to a linen base attached directly to the wood. Rabbit skin glue was used to reattach the paint. Hot size was applied through tissue paper, softening the paint. The tissue was removed, and the glue was pushed under the flaking paint with a brush. The surface was then covered with plastic wrap, and the paint was massaged with increasing amounts of pressure. Once the area adhered, it was cleaned of all latex paint using methylene chloride, acetone, and a scalpel. Acryloid B67 in solution of xylene 1:16 was used to varnish the surface, both to strengthen the paint, gilt, and gesso layers so that the substructure could be filled in and to provide a barrier between the original paint and inpainting. After inpainting, the entire coat of arms was varnished using Liquitex Soluvar Varnish.
