Abstract
Three pectorals of the 19th dynasty, exhibited in the Egyptian Antiquities department of the Louvre Museum, were analyzed in the Laboratoire de Recherche des Musées de France (LRMF) to determine the materials chosen for the manufacture of the jewels. Various analytical methods were used: for the qualitative chemical studies, the authors employed an electron probe coupled with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and, for the first time on these pectorals, an ion beam method (PIXE). These analyses are nondestructive and do not require any preparation. To calibrate the results, reference gems were analyzed under the same conditions; for the mineralogical studies, micro-samplings were performed on broken or damaged inlays and then analyzed with x-ray diffractometry. Important differences among the three pectorals are pointed out: one is constituted with only natural stones, the second with colored glass and frits, and the last one includes natural stones, colored glass, and Egyptian blue frits.
