Abstract
The analysis of use-wear polish variation and differences according to rock types contributes to the study of the polish formation process. The examination of the polished surface on andesite, rhyolite, and a hard variety of slate with the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and optical light microscope shows that the polished surfaces are produced by mild wear. This provides a basis for use-wear analysis of stone farming tools made of these rocks, which come from early Japanese rice paddy cultivation contexts.
