Abstract
After some considerations about the nature of light and the influence light has upon the atmosphere and emotions, attention is drawn to technical, economical, and design properties of fixtures. Aluminum and steel will guarantee durability. Heat conductivity and dust collection should be considered. Plastic parts are to be avoided. Luminance of light sources should be minimal. Excessively bright light causes irritation and fatigue. This implies that the lamp has to be fitted deep within the fixture, to ensure a small cut-off angle. The light can be shaped and guided by means of dark light reflectors so that the source itself stays invisible. Aluminum is the most effective reflecting material, and a parabola is the best shape for a reflector. Further factors are energy consumption, uniformity, and ease of use. A dramatizing effect can be created by the use of point-shaped light sources, by various types of light, by special effects (color, stripes, texts) and by contrasts. Museum lighting should meet the following requirements: a low intensity background lighting; reduced daylight; light sources with minimal damage factors, a flexible light plan. Light must not disturb; it must enrich the experience. A good understanding between the curator, the architect, the electrician, and the light designer is necessary.
