Summarized results, based on dissertations for Technischen Universitat Dresden, are presented of studies in E. Germany on buried timber from a Slav fortress wall built beginning in the late 10th century and recent timber. Density values of buried timber were similar to those for recent timber, but a strong correlation between density and growth ring width class was not observed. In buried timber, correlations between density/growth ring width and (a) com pression/(b) bending/(c) impact bending strength were in general not observed, although there were weak correlations between density/growth ring width and (b), and between growth ring width and (c). Values of (a), (b), and (c) were in general lower in buried than in recent timber. -- AATA
