A systematic method for determining the water and water vapor properties of wood, detached coatings and painted wood is presented. It was shown that coatings on wood are more permeable than previously thought from free film studies. Entry via the end wood is a particular problem, and various wood treatments were studied to demonstrate their effectiveness. -- AATA
