This article describes an ethylene oxide vacuum fumigation unit for use in archives and libraries and includes safety precautions, the chemical and physical properties of ethylene oxide,and the requirements for efficient use. By using ethylene oxide injected into an atmosphere of a 95% vacuum, the sterilization and disinfestation properties are further enhanced, although such a technique requires strictly controlled conditions and relatively expensive machinery.
