In 1937-1938 Ulrich Middeldorf noted that many of the drawings by Bartolini and other 19th century sculptors in the collections of the Uffizi and other Italian museums were of doubtful authenticity. These notes, stored in a folio of Bartolini drawings in the Uffizi, were discovered by Roberta Olson who discusses the work of Bartolini's pupil Egisto Rossi (the supposed author of the questioned works). Hallmarks of both Rossi's honest drawings and his forgeries include: red chalk marks, suspicious collectors' marks and stamps, and blue mounts. As Rossi mixed authentic drawings by 19th century sculptors together with his forgeries in the lots of drawings he sold to the Uffizi in 1897-1899, stylistic criteria were used to distinguish genuine from fake. -- AATA
