Abstract
The first systematic restoration of a work of art with historic significance in Greece was the restoration of the mosaics of the Daphni monastery in 1892-1894 by the Italian, Francesco Novo. This case history is used to describe the evolution of restoration in Greece also considering changes in attitude. For centuries craftsmen and artists were employed to do restoration work. Not until the 20th century, after World War II, did scientific restoration appear. After 1960 the Greek Archaeological Service expanded its activities undertaking the restoration of many monuments. A few attempts were made to create conservation schools at the collegiate level between 1967 and 1977 in Greece which were shortlived. The numbers of conservators employed today by the Greek Archaeological Service are given and are categorized according to academic qualifications. A school of conservation was opened in 1985 in the Technologic Educational Institute of Athens.
