Chemical and physical observations on seven small samples from the chair. Description of micro-cross-sections, examination by X-ray, and outline of analytical techniques. Oil-paint was used for the original decoration of 1299; later the chair was ornamented with gilding and tin, the latter coated with glaze together with some enamel or glass.
