Abstract
This article describes a navigational technique for marine surveys developed for use in conjunction with a small-boat search for the Angel Gabriel, sunk in 1635 in the vicinity of Pemaquid, Maine. Geomorphology of the search area and budgetary limitations ruled out the use of range markers or electronic navigation systems, respectively. The method developed to circumvent these restrictions utilizes a hand-held programmable calculator to improve on the accuracy and speed normally associated with piloting a boat by taking bearings from two transit stations. A position fix rate of one per minute is feasible, allowing the information to be used to guide the vessel in real time. The method achieves high accuracy while remaining simple to use and requiring only a modest budget--a major concern for many such projects. The success of this specific application indicates the potential for a hand-held calculator to be used to save time and effort in a variety of situations encountered by archaeologists.
