Abstract
In a survey of the history of wax resin relining, the introduction of the vacuum hot table in the 1950s is described as a welcome solution for practical problems. Several disadvantages and frequent faults in the early use of the hot table are mentioned. Too high temperatures and pressures led to damage and deformation of the paint structure. Moreover, wax lining is irreversible. Lining and impregnation are combined in the same treatment. Porous paint layers and uncovered areas of canvas will discolor when impregnated with wax. Wax may prohibit the application of a different relining method in the future. Very large paintings increase greatly in weight, and this may become a disadvantage. Advantages of a well-performed wax relining are the long life of the treatment and the fact that, on later cleaning, the penetration of solvents and dissolved varnish may be hindered. The details of the method are given to stimulate colleagues into reconsidering and adapting their methods but not to invite laypersons to use this information as a guide for their trials and errors. Future development should include methods for minimal treatment because full treatment is seldom necessary, and modern art in particular requires a different approach.
