A number of prepared glue-paste samples, containing commonly used additives in glue-paste recipes have been examined. Peel strength tests were conducted on the samples to give measurements of the bond performance, and uniaxial load/extension tests were carried out to give indications of the relative stiffness of the lining supports. The majority of the additives tested - plasticisers, (Venice turpentine, linseed oil and molasses), wetting agents, (vinegar), and a bulking agent, (rye flour) - reduced the bond strength and had no appreciable effect in reducing the stiffness of the lining materials. Ox gall was the only additive rested that increased the flexibility of the lining without lowering the bond strength. Hydrogen peroxide, mixed with glue-paste as a non-toxic pre servative, prevented mould growth in the wet paste but further examination is required to ensure that this does not degrade the canvas. -- ICCROM
