The problem of conservation is to preserve an object that is of both aesthetic and historical value. Until the early 19th century, conservation efforts infringed on the form and substance of the work of art that had been treated. A conservative theory of conservation characterized early work in the field and still influences current methods and treatments. An overview of the history of conservation in Poland until the end of World War II is presented. -- AATA
