Abstract
The document discusses the development of an environmental policy for the British Museum. The influence of the way the collection is used, the restrictions of the grade 1 listed building, the stability of the collection, and the results of deterioration studies carried out by the Museum conservation scientists, have been the main factors in defining the policy as a pragmatic document. The environmental factors of most concern are temperature, relative humidity, ultraviolet and visible light, insects, and handling.
