The authors offer criticisms of presently-established tree-ring chronologies produced fromart-historical objects. They propose that these objects represent wood imports into England and Flanders (rather than locally-grown wood) from an Eastern Baltic origin: the resulting estimates of missing sapwood would be incorrect, amounting to a four year error in the chronology.
