The chemical and physical nature of bone is changed by treatment at the time of of archaeological deposition, for example cremation or cooking, and by the environmental character of the deposition site. The effects of previous treatment upon the subsequent accumulation of the defect signal is studied for modern animal bones using a range of conditions to simulate ancient practices. Different methods of treating the data are investigated.
