Deals with the state of the stones and pediment sculptures of the ancient temple of Aphaia on the island of Aegina, in Greece described by Spon & Wheeler in 1675, and more thoroughly excavated by Carl Haller von Hallerstein and others. Graves were opened and excavations made on surrounding terraces, revealing traces of an earlier temple, ca. 580 BC. Fragments and stones from this earlier temple were reused. Big blocks were cut down and reused so that it is extremely difficult to estimate the size of the earlier temple. Brittleness and flaking are part of the problems encountered by stone conservators, as well as weathering from atmospheric conditions. Describes various treatments.
