Channeling of energetic charged particles in crystals results when such particles enter a crystal with small angles with respect to the lattice rows or its planes; the ions suffer a number of small angle collisions with lattice atoms which tend to channel their path inside the crystal. A use of this effect is to locate foreign atoms in crystals. A goniometer permits finding the channeling directions of the crystal by irradiation.
