Two extraordinary caches of lime plaster statues from the seventh millenium BC were blocklifted at the site of 'Ain Ghazal, Jordan, in 1983 and 1985. The first cache is being conserved in London while the second has been treated at the Conservation Analytical Laboratory in Washington. The statues in the two caches have many similarities, but there are differences in form, size, fabrication, condition and conservation. The second cache is the subject here, with comparison made to the first. In addition to two full-figure statues, it contained three two-headed busts, unique among Neolithic plaster statues. Treatment choices were informed by the eventual return of the statues to Jordan and included consolidation with a commercial ethyl silicate solution selected on the basis of a test program: adhesion of fragments with Acryloid B48; and use of a multi-layered internal support.
