Following armed conflict or natural disaster, cultural heritage preservation is vital in the reconstruction of national identity and local community. The Iraqi Institute for the Conservation of Antiquities and Heritage, located in Erbil, Iraq, is a successful partnership between local and international institutions and individuals. This intensive educational program, designed to teach international standards of conservation in addition to English language and critical thinking skills, is supporting the preservation of Iraq’s immensely important archaeological, historic, and cultural heritage. The model may serve as a guide for other global educational programs in the future.
