Abstract
The use of size exclusion chromatography (SEC) as a relatively low-cost chromatographic technique is described for the investigation of archaeological samples containing bitumen or wood tar. Bitumen samples have a featureless molecular mass distribution (MMD) between 102 and 104 Da, whereas different wood tars show distinct, corresponding peaks with an MMD ending well below 104 Da.
