Mexican experiences in the conservation of wooden archaeological artifacts in a flooded condition trace back to the 1960s. A number of conservation and restoration works were carried out in the past, following traditional European models, but expectations were not materialized. In Mexico, studies concerning the deterioration of woods coming from warm climates and used in the past to manufacture objects are few, while studies on original archaeological contexts are not numerous either. In 1997, Mexico started to develop a project whose analysis and intervention methodology allows the simultaneous determination of cultural materials' condition and possible conservation procedures. The objective of the conservation project associated with wooden artifacts from the Manatì archaeological site is to identify damage based on wood characteristics, and determine the archaeological context's influence on preservation. The project, additionally, specifies the effectiveness of two conservation treatments with great application prospects in countries of limited resources. The analysis of materials and conservation methods allowed to contrast results at the technical, theoretical and practical levels.
