Abstract
The adhesive strength and melting point were measured for 64 whiting-wax-resin compositions ranging from 30-100per thousand wax and up to 70per thousand whiting added to the basic wax-resin mixture. A pure yellow beeswax (MP 63.5° C), estergum (colophony-glcerol process, M.P. 88-90° C) and refined whiting (calcium carbonate) were used. The minimum failure loads in a peeling configuration are reported. Gradual strength increase on the addition of resin to a ration of 2 parts estergum to 3 parts wax was observed. Some test data for materials aged naturally for 4-5 years are reported. It is concluded that wax-rich adhesives are most suitable for lining. The increase in brittleness on aging of the adhesive is noted.
