In Part I of this paper, it was shown that some distinction could be made between the various types of fragments merely by a superficial examination. It was necessary, however, to establish the categories more rigorously and Part II describes the results of the chemical examination of the same fragments. This examination was primarily directed to the detection of tanning agents, since it was considered that their presence in a fragment would be indicative of a leather and their absence of a parchment.
