Abstract
The article discusses Steichen's development as a painter and photographer from his apprentice days in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to 1919 in Voulangis, France, when he turned to photography alone. Mentioned are experiments with the gum bichromate process mixing photography and drawing. The results have been called paintographs or photopaints. Illustrations of Steichen's paintings, pigment prints, and platinum and ferroprussiate prints are included. -- AATA
