If textiles contain antioxidants or are stored in packaging materials (films) having fugitive antioxidants, yellowing may occur during storage. The antioxidants associated with yellowing include BHT, BHE, NHE, and others. Oxidation is often caused by exposure to oxides of nitrogen fumes (common air pollutants) but fumes may also be generated by space heaters and lift trucks. A GC-MC procedure is given to identify the antioxidant and oxidized products. fabrics such as rubber, nylon, polyester, and cotton may contain antioxidants as well as packaging materials. Storing fabrics in an acidic state (pH less than 5) will avoid yellowing)(not recommended for museum textiles) as well as the elimination of oxides of nitrogen fumes. -- AATA
