Purchased by the Baltimore Museum of Art for $500.00 and later identified by Professor Howard Merritt of the University of Rochestcr as A Wild Scene by Thomas Cole, the famous lost painting proved to be an exciting and rewarding conservation project. Examination under high magnification disclosed few large losses, but considerable abrasion, the addition of a pigmented varnish which concealed the original dramatic play of light and impressionistic details. The fabric support was buckled, with a prominent ridge across the center where two pieces of fabric had been sewn together, and with fine horizontal ridges, possibly caused by being rolled. Technical details are given of the removal of aged varnish layers, flattening of the fabric support and strengthening it by wax impregnation and double lining. As well as of the materials used in inpainting after lining. The surface coatings applied and the method of framing are also described.
