The conservator of the conservation department recently established at the City Art Museum, St. Louis, describes the equipment for the examination, care and treatment of the collections with an emphasis on paintings. The photographic areas contain cameras, accessories and lighting to take color, panchromatic, ultraviolet and infrared photographs, macrographs and micrographs. The x-ray unit is portable, modified at the factory with a. 5 mm focal spot, a beryllium window, and a 0-110 kv range. The main studio contains easels, examination and work tables, an adjustable mobile binocular microscope, a 4' x 7' vacuum hot table, press, and storage units for materials and equipment. In addition to periodic inspections and a steadyprogram of treatment according to a priority system, the conservator has initiated a survey of the museum environment with the purpose of providing humidity control, and ultraviolet filtration.
