In August 1989 the Canadian Conservation Institute organised a 5-day workshop for examining inuit techniques of preparing caribou skin. It was held in the Northern Studies Centre, on the tundra outside Churchill Manitoba. The four instructors provided them knowledge of the variety of techniques and tools used in areas from Greenland to Alaska. The workshop considered in detail preparation of caribou and seal skins, initial flaying to garment creation. It provided a great deal of information concerning preparation techniques and how these may have a bearing on the condition of old skin and fur clothing which ethnographic conservators may have to deal with. Useful information wa also provided for the identification of native repair techniques and the wear likely to be encountered on skin clothing. The workshop may be repeated.
