Artists using pastels should be aware of their potentially high exposure to toxic pigments, e.g., those containing lead, cadmium, cobalt, and chromium. Since pastels are a dry medium, the pigments contained become easily airborne, causing inhalation and ingestion of particles. Some pigments, e.g., chromates, may also be hazardous by skin contact. Anyone using spray fixatives should be aware of their potentially high exposure to the toxic solvents they contain since the products are sprayed in the air. In addition, the plastic particulates that comprise the fixative itself may be inhaled. A list of precautions to take when using pastels or spray fixatives is given. Neither pastels nor spray fixatives should be used by pregnant women or individuals with respiratory problems, due to the pigment and solvent hazards.
