Abstract
The polychromy of the Romanesque portal David and Betsabe from the St. Bartholomew church in Trzebnica (Poland) is mostly two-layer. The first one is a polychromy put directly on stone, the second one being a yellow ochre overpaint - Fe(OH)3. Samples from a recess in the David's throne show the presence of lead-white under a layer of paint black, while a chalk layer is found under the red gown of David. The following pigments have been identified: lead white, chalk, cinnabar, red lead, oxide red, azurite, malachite green, plant black. The presence of verdigris cannot be excluded in the green fragments. No traces of gold were found on the crowns - the layer has probably not preserved. No traces of gold were found on the crowns - the layer has probably not preserved. The binder was analysed by means of paper chromatography. Protein binder was stated both in the polychromy and in the ochre overpaint. A scarce amount of the available samples did not allow for analysis of the type of protein binder.
