The conference of the ICOM Committee on Museum Scientific Laboratories, held jointly with the ICOM Commission on the Care of Paintings, at the State Hermitage Museum in Leningrad in September, 1963 is described by one of the delegates. Besides listing the papers given and the reports made and describing the vastness and richness of the exhibition galleries of the Hermitage Museum, the article mentions the workshops for cleaning and repairing all classes of objects. Especially interesting were the laboratories where transfer work of loess wall paintings from Central Asia was being conducted. Electro-dialysis equipment was used for desalting the wall paintings and polybutyl methacrylate synthetic resin was the principle fixative. Following the conference the delegates journeyed to Moscow where, in addition to visiting the Kremlin, they saw an exhibit at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, especially prepared to show examples of techniques for the preservation of paintings, prints, drawings, metal objects, pottery and antiquities of all kinds.
