Abstract
X-ray techniques can be applied with pottery sherds to reconstruct forming techniques originally used to produce vessels. The method uses the basic principle that different forming techniques involve different and characteristic applications of pressure to plastic clay, and that inclusions in the clay take up characteristic preferred orientations in response to these pressures. Data obtained from such studies can be used in establishing broadly based pottery typologies.
