In 1910, Meleager and Atalante of the Alte Pinakothek was the subject of a major controversy because later additions to both sides of the original composition had been folded back. The original itself was believed to be repainted in parts because of the different appearance of several old copies showing Atalante more naked. There was also confusion as to the date of origin of some of the copies, two of which were examined together with the original by differential thermal analysis. Apparently Rubens's colors had been prepared very individually and showed great resemblance to materials used by the artists who painted the right hand addition. The results obtained from the examination of the copy in private possession however, differ considerably from those findings. This also applies to the left addition. Very likely the Munich copy dates back to the time when the original had not yet been given its final appearance by Rubens's own hand. The copy from the private collection on the other hand incorporates these authentic changes as well as changes which were necessitated by the right hand addition.
