Abstract
This article describes in very basic terms the principles and media for painting, such as; oil, tempera, watercolor, gouache, and synthetic resin colors. Painting supports can be canvas; made of cotton, hessian, sacking, sail cloth and similar textiles, or; wooden panels, hardboard, cardboard, and paper. Gesso is a mixture of an inert white powders, usually containing calcium carbonate. Layers of a painting on canvas consist of: canvas, size, priming, imprimatura, paint layers, and varnish. Painting on panel consists of the following layers: wood panel, Gesso Grosso, Gesso Sottile, Bole, Glair, gold leaf, paint layers, and varnish.
