Abstract
The experiments performed have shown that the application of zinc fluosilicate provides structural consolidation of Gotland sandstone. A series of requirements, however, must be fulfilled. The concentration of a solution must be carefully fitted to the treated sandstone, as a too high concentrated solution may be an additional cause of stone deterioration. The depth of penetration of a fluosilicate depends on the method of impregnation. Capillary rise provides only a partial consolidation of stone and the treated zone can not be enlarged by subsequent impregnation processes. The proposed impregnation method which consists on a forced flow of fluosilicate, enables homogeneous consolidation of the whole structure of stone during a single impregnation cycle. Impregnation of Gotland sandstone with fluosilicates increases its compressive strength by over 100% and makes stone partly resistant to a harmful action of water soluble salts. No effect of stone occlusion has been observed. Experiments were carried out on sound, nondeteriorated stone. Therefore, some of the problems met in stone monuments made of Gotland sandstone have not been resolved yet.
