Abstract
The longevity of our national treasures contained within the Air and Space Museum hinges on the application of state-of-the art corrosion protection technology by the conservator. The continual development of new corrosion protection systems and new methods to quantify corrosion performance, makes it necessary to reassess present methods for optimum conservation. Currently, there are questions as to whether waxes, acrylics, or urethanes provide the best protection or whether certain waxes and greases may be equally suitable. Coupled with the issue of coating performance are concerns about possible damage caused by surface preparation and damage caused by removal of the coating. A twelve month collaborative research effort between the Center for Electrochemical Sciences at the University of Virginia and the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution is proposed to examine these questions. Four phases of investigation will be conducted: (1) long term electrochemical response using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, (2) long term controlled atmospheric exposure, (3) examination of damage caused by surface preparation, and (4) examination of surface damage caused by coating/inhibitor removal. Benefits from this research include (1) a state-of-the-art source book of protective coatings and inhibitors for the museum conservator, and (2) a comprehensive survey of the most promising coatings and inhibitors for the corrosion scientist. The common bond of scholarly endeavor between these two institutions will provide a unique opportunity to advance both corrosion science and the ability of our civilization to preserve its national treasures.
