Abstract
This journal article describes deterioration of the Statue of Liberty and restoration undertaken by the United States Department of the Interior - National Parks Service, commencing in 1983. Galvanic corrosion, accelerated by moisture and condensation between copper sheeting and the wrought iron skeleton resulted in severe rusting and detachment of rivets. Acid rain may have contributed to the formation of antlerite in the copper sheeting's exterior patina. Pitch, used to waterproof the interior, seeped through lapped seams, dripping onto the exterior. Other structural problems included fine cracking due to stress or plastic deformation, pitting, granulation, and requirements for additional reinforcing of the structural framework. Replacement metals were chosen on the basis of elasticity, density, thermal expansion characteristics and electrolytic compatibility. Some treatments include the use of benzotriazole (BTA) as a corrosion inhibitor, application of a weather-resistant silicone sealant to lapped seams, and installation of mechanical ventilation to remove humidity in the interior. The article is a reference for metallurgy, outdoor sculptures and architectural conservation.
