Internal stress in latex coatings of different thicknesses was measured using a cantilever method. In order to understand better the processes involved, evaporation kinetics measurements were carried out in parallel with those of internal stress. This paper demonstrates the usefulness of internal stress measurements, alone or with other techniques, in characterizing different phases in the coating formation and investigating the physical processes taking place at each stage.
