Abstract
The ether-soluble fraction of Baltic amber (succinite) has been analyzed by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry; many diterpenoids of the abietane, pimarane, and labdane series have been identified. Also found was a pattern of monoterpenoids similar to that encountered in fossil kauri resin, sesquiterpenoids, and many other compounds including terpenol succinate and hemisuccinate esters. The ether-insoluble part of the resin was shown to be largely a copolymer of the labdatrienoid compounds communic acid and communol, of a kind formed in many modern conifer resins, with its hydroxyl groups partially succinylated. The results decisively refute Rottlaender's hypothesis (AATA 8-1071, 8-1072, 8-1073, 8-1079, 9-431, 14-626, and 14-627) that Baltic amber is an ester-linked polymer of modified diabietic acid.
