Before World War II, there were hardly any museums in Hungary where ethnographic objects were treated in an expert way. In the past ten years there have been changes in the ethnographic museum, resulting largely from the availability of academic training for restorers. There has been a marked increase in the number of ethnographic items added to collections; the condition of these artifacts is such that immediate attention is necessary to determine what treatments are required and to see that this work is carried out. Restorers were taken away from objects collected earlier. Restorers should have some authority to decide on matters concerning storage, security, and exhibition conditions.
