Abstract
Over fifty wool textiles from the 1st century Roman-British levels around Vinolanda were examined. About 10 percent showed evidence of dyeing, mainly by madder or madder-related species. Also, over 90 samples from Anglo-Scandinavian York were examined. Over half showed evidence of dyeing, mainly by madder but some indigotin and possibly kermes were identified. See also 21-1806 for more extensive study of subject and 22-928 for abstract of presentation. -- AATA
