Abstract
19th-century artists, beginning with the nazarene brotherhood of German arts at Rome, experimented with the use of ancient and mediaeval mural techniques for modern paintings. Use of encaustic or of new combinations of mineral and organic binding media created restoration problems from the beginning. Gustav Klimt's monumental Beethoven frieze (1902) is an example of the problems presented by composite materials. Photographs, references.
