The decay of sgraffito decorations is sometimes a specific process differing from that of mural paintings in general, due to specific techniques and materials, outdoor exposure and weathering, and the fact that many were plastered over and painted over after the renaissance. The ageing phenomena of sgraffito mortars are described, based on examples from lower Austria. Cleaning and consolidation methods are described. The difficulty of achieving transparent retouching is stressed. References.
