Abstract
The pigment of three Impressionist paintings, Monet's 1877 Gare Saint Lazare, Renoir's ca. 1879 Seine at Asnières, and Cézanne's late-1870s Mountains in Provence, in the National Gallery (London), were analyzed using the laser microprobe optical microscopy and x-ray diffraction. A brief history of the paintings is given in every case, together with comments on painting technique and buildup of paint layers.
